Invitation

Dear colleagues!

It is our pleasure to invite you to take part at the 14th International Meeting of the International Humic Substances Society (IHSS-14), which will be held on September 14-19, 2008. The conference is entitled "From molecular understanding to innovative applications of humic substances" and will be held under auspices of the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC) .

The particular goals of this IHSS conference are to demonstrate the growing importance of humic substances in the context of global climate change, and to draw attention of industrial chemists to conversion of huge resources of humified biomass into alternative feedstock for bio-based products. To attain the latter goal, the satellite exhibition "Humic materials - resources for the 21st century" will take place during the conference.

The opening ceremony will take place in the Palace of Culture of the Lomonosov Moscow State University in parallel with the opening of the 2nd International IUPAC Conference on Green Chemistry Scientists, engineers, and humate producers are invited to use this conference for intensive discussions on the recent findings in the field of basic and applied research on humic materials.

The conference venue will be a four-deck ship "Leonid Krasin" traveling from Moscow to Saint Petersburg along Volga River and Volga-Balt Channel. Number of participants is limited to 300 persons due to ship capacity. Details on the ship and tour description see at the website of the tour-operator www.mosturflot.com.

Enjoy quiet Northern landscapes and stormy scientific discussions!

We will be happy to welcome you aboard our ship,

Irina Perminova
Co-Chair of the Organizing Committee

Please submit your abstract by email ihss@org.chem.msu.ru indicating your preferred session topic and mode of presentation according to the guidelines given (Download "Template of Abstract").

The file name should be the name of the author (name.doc). Please submit the abstract by using MS-Word document format (*.doc). The maximum allowed file size is 2 MB.

If you have any problems, please contact the Conference Secretariat.

After submission you will receive a confirmation of receipt. The Scientific Committee reserves the right to accept or reject papers, and to assign them to oral or poster presentations. After the review process you will be informed about acceptance and presentation mode.

In case if you are not able to attend the conference, publishing of the abstract as well as an extra copy of the Proceedings Book costs 50 Euro.

Scientific Program

Scientific program of the IHSS-14 will include oral sessions, poster sessions and round table discussions. Oral sessions will take place in the morning and poster sessions - in the afternoon. Oral sessions will include keynote invited lectures - 40 minute long (30 min talk and 10 min questions) and volunteered oral presentations - 20 minutes long (15 min talk and 5 min questions). The special section will be dedicated to presentations of the IHSS travel awardees. The presentations at this session will be 10 minutes long (7 minutes talk and 3 minutes questions). Posters will have size of A0 format with portrait orientation (mm): 841 (W) x 1189 (H). Please, note, that the round table discussions will include a series of short (3 minutes) presentations followed by discussions. The designated speakers appear as underlined authors in the following list of abstract titles.

The special feature of the IHSS-14 program will be round table discussions (RTD), which will take place in the after dinner time. The round table discussions will take place on September 15 and 16, 2008. Three parallel round tables will be running on those days yielding a total of six: The topics of RTD will be following the main topics of the conference. The most attended session 2 "Humic substances as indicators of changing environment and anthropogenic repercussions" will be split into two round tables devoted to aquatic and soil environments, respectively. The goal of round tables is to provide more space for discussions on the burning topics of humic research. The round tables will be two hours long: first hour will include 20 short (3 min) oral presentations (RTOP) and the second hour - open discussions. The results of the round table discussions will set the grounds for the concluding resolution of the IHSS-14 conference.

Discover Russia: the scenic rivers, channels and lakes which connect Moscow and St. Petersburg. Follow the path of Peter the Great, who sailed from Moscow to St. Petersburg on a quest to modernize Russia. Travel along ancient trade routes with small towns and villages on the banks of the Volga river. Explore the Golden Ring town Uglich and Kirillo-Belozersky monastery in Goritsy. Marvel wooden churches of Kizhy Island built without a single nail. Enjoy quiet Northen landscapes. Indian Summer weather is expected.

How to get to Moscow

There are four major airports in Moscow: Sheremetyevo-1, Sheremetyevo-2, Domodedovo, and Vnukovo. If you come from abroad, you will arrive either to Sheremetyevo-2 (all major airlines and Aeroflot) or to Domodedovo (Swiss Airlines, AirMalta, British Airways, Germania Express). The Vnukovo airport serves mostly domestic flights as well as GermanWings flights to/from Germany. The ship will be located very close to the metro station "Rechnoy vokzal".

From St. Petersburg to Moscow you can take a comfortable night train for a price of 100 Euro leaving around 10 p.m. and arriving at 6 a.m. or you can take an international flight directly from Pulkovo-airport of St. Petersburg.
